Dial 100: reports of violence against elderly rose 65% in 2013 in Brazil.

During 2013, cases of neglect, psychological and financial abuse were most complaints made through the Dial 100, free telephone complaints by the Secretariat on Human Rights (SDH) of the Presidency.
According to the data of SDH, children and grandchildren are the main perpetrators of the elderly and elderly women are the main victims. The number of complaints grew 65.7% last year: there were 38,976, against 23,523 in 2012.
The increase can be explained by greater dissemination of the service, which began operations in 2011, and the increase of public awareness about the rights of the elderly.
Of 71,358 assault suspects, the children were identified as perpetrators in 36 600 complaints (51.5% of total), as the grandchildren are among those responsible for 5900 cases (8.25%) and its large most of the victims are women (28,300, or 64% of cases).
This evidence may reflect population data, such as the “feminization” of Old Age: according to the 2010 Census, of the 20.6 million elderly people, 11.4 million are women and 9.1 million men. Already in many families dependence on income elderly is another point to be considered, since Brazil is one of the countries with the highest welfare of the world coverage and more economically vulnerable regions, the elderly becomes the only fixed income provider generating intrafamily conflict.
In the ranking of violence against the elderly, neglect appears in most complaints (29,400, equivalent to 75% of the total), followed by the psychological violence (cited 21,832 times, or in 56% of cases), financial abuse ( 16,796,000, 43% of cases) and physical violence (10,803, 27.72%).
