The Brazilian Association of Alzheimer is a 20-year old non-governmental organization. Its mission is to have national representation and be the core center for all people involved with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia. Its membership is formed by patients, family members and professional caregivers, and the organization provides free-of-charge support groups, coordinated by volunteers, to meet the needs of populations in different socio-economic and cultural settings.
This project has being developed in the whole country, with the purpose of standardizing caregiver intervention actions, through the development of a manual, and the training of coordinators and multipliers, to expand the number and reach of support groups, and provision of guidance to other cities of the country. It also intended to increase the number of older persons and family members served (currently around 2,000), and to invest in the quality of care by forming cognitive and social stimulation, and physical education groups.
