The mission of Instituto Kairós is to foster sustainable development through natural resources, in order to favor social inclusion, integration and cultural transformation of the community. Located in the District of Macacos, it works in the social-cultural development of children and adolescents, in professional training and income-generation for youngsters and adults, and in projects that focus on the social participation of older persons.
The goal of the project is to recover most of the local culture by the appreciation of the oral tradition cultivated by the older persons. It has fostered a process of social and tourist development in the area, and interaction of generations.
Workshops led by older persons were held, focusing the development of productive units based on local culture and wisdom (sweets, plants, spices, crafts); storytelling and singing groups; meetings to record old stories and childhood songs; intergenerational meetings; the making of a documentary film on local history and traditions; development of health-prevention actions for older persons.
