On September 9, 2015 Laura Machado, member of HelpAge International, was present at the United Nations to launch the GLOBAL AGE WATCH INDEX 2015, along with Toby Porter the CEO of HelpAge.
The Global Index Aging was created in 2013 by HelpAge and its goal is to have a ranking, by a measure of economic well-being and social of the elderly, in order to prepare the countries to have better local public policies to this audience.
This year 2015 the report was released in early September at the UN in order to enter in the agenda of governments that, later this month, will be committing to the goals of sustainable development for 2016. This position to anticipate the disclosure had the mission not to allow “no one was left behind” in the objectives of sustainable development, including older people in 2030 will be 16% of the world population.
The Brazil this year was 56th place among the 96 countries surveyed, and had very bad rates compared to other countries in the Latin American region. This result shows that although we have legislation to ensure the rights of older people (the Elderly), we still need to invest a lot in the implementation of public policies for this population in our country.
