The National Guard Portuguese (GNR) develops special programs of community policing, as the Program Support 65 – Safety in the Elderly which could be replicated in other countries and aims to ensure the safety of Seniors who are isolated, support them and sensitize them to the crime and consequently to the violation of rights.

Also, they make the lifting of the number of elderly people living alone and / or isolated by the Census Senior Portuguese. In 2013 recorded almost 34,000 elderly people in these situations, more than double the first edition of the Census in 2011. This increase can be explained not only by population aging, but also because the GNR have managed to reach more people .

The area of intervention of the Programme Support 65 covers 94% of the territory of the continent and risk cases detected, depending on the situation, they are signaled to Social Security, the Holy Houses of Mercy, the private institutions of social solidarity, to social services and health centers. There are many cases that require extra attention, such as the last operation found a 101-year-old man who lived alone and no phone and now is a home.
