Place: São Caetano do Sul – SP

The Study Center, São Caetano do Sul Physical Conditioning Lab is a non-governmental organization whose mission is to investigate and disseminate knowledge about the relationship between physical activities and health. It has focused on health recovery, maintenance, promotion and excellence within the population.

This is a capacity-building project targeting health professional, employees and caregivers in nursing homes for older persons in the city of São Caetano do Sul, aiming the development of a physical activity program for the residents of these facilities. The idea is to minimize functional capacity losses of older persons and improve their quality of life, considering that in most nursing homes physical activities are not offered, thus making older persons prone to lose their functional capacity. The project includes all residents of the facilities, regardless of their functional status, and the activities are tailored to the needs and possibilities each older person.

The project is in the stage of interventions implementation in each of the facilities included, with a total of 149 older persons being served by the project. In addition to the interventions at the nursing homes through workshops, a project to encourage the practice of physical activities on a daily basis was developed in each facility, and that is a 30-minute walk a day by each older person.
