The State of Rio Grande do Norte’s Public Ministry Association – Project: “Urban Transportation and Older Population: Building a new relationship” (2011 – 2012)

The State of Rio Grande do Norte Public Ministry Association

Coordinators: Yadia Gama Maio and Maria Luiza Trindade

Place: The State of Rio Grande do Norte

The Project aims to sensitize and develop awareness of bus drivers, fees collectors and licensed public transportation operatives of the rights of older persons through education and information, based on report of rights violations, in order to improve the relationship between these players.

The project trained 2,775 drivers, fee collectors and licensed operatives of 25 companies of the State of Rio Grande do Norte, with the use of a new methodology developed specifically for this project, with theoretical concepts and simulation of five real-life bus-riding situations for the participants to experience what older persons go through in each one of them.

Of the 25 companies that embraced this project, those who did not have it yet implemented a call center at the consumer services department to receive complaints o folder persons rights violations, and nine companies developed older-rights good practices on their own, such as the posting of posters and notices with the rights of older persons on the buses, sponsoring the printing of the Older persons Rights Act to be handed out to the population, among others.

As a result, according to information from the Police – Older persons Affairs, the call centers and the District Attorney Office- Older persons Division, there has been a 75% decrease in the number of complaints of older persons rights violation in the public transportation service.
